Published

on

Today’s guest is Live Oak Mayor Mary M. Dennis!

Bio

Mary M. Dennis was born in Newton, Mississippi. Mary’s father served in the United States Army and the family traveled throughout Europe and the United States. The family moved to San Antonio, Texas when Mary was 15. Mary, also known as “Little Mary” is the daughter of Mary Wyatt, the former owner of “Flowers by Mary”.

She is a Sam Houston High School graduate, a paraprofessional with the San Antonio Independent School District and completed a Mortuary Science Associate Degree at San Antonio College. Mary is passionate about the education and safety of our children. Mary is also a licensed Funeral Director having worked for both Sutton & Sutton Mortuary and Lewis Funeral Home. She helps wonderful people make difficult decisions and provide assistance during one of the most difficult times in their lives. Mary has found both of these professions to be very rewarding.

Mary has received numerous awards, but her most noteworthy accomplishment is being chosen to serve as Mayor for the City of Live Oak in the June 12, 2010 run-off election. She is the First African American to serve the City of Live Oak in this capacity. Prior to her Mayoral election, she ran twice for council seats in Live Oak and was defeated each time by a few votes. As destiny would have it, Mary was given the opportunity to complete the council place terms both times as the elected council person resigned. Mary Dennis says “It is about not giving up and being determined. This is something she learned from her parents – to never ever give up. Whatever your dream is – go for it!” Currently Mayor Dennis is serving her second term as Mayor of Live Oak, Mary desires to bring the city closer together across varied backgrounds. Mary believes that government is about helping people, being a good steward of tax dollars and making City government more efficient.

Her additional civic activities includes service as the Vice President to the Northeast Partnership, member of Randolph Metro Chamber, City of Live Oak Economic Development Corporation, City of Live Oak Planning and Zoning Commission, Bowden Charter of Business and Professional Women, San Antonio Commission of Literacy and Mary is a charter member of National Council of Negro Women – Ruth Jones McClendon Chapter. Ms. Dennis also served as Commissioner on the Mayor’s Commission for the Status of Women, San Antonio Livestock and Rodeo Public Affairs Committee, the Martin Luther King Jr. Commission and President of Pearls (Professional Business Women). She is a member of Livingway Christian Church.

Mary epitomizes the power of persistence as well as the incomparable power of an abiding faith in God.

Hunter Beaton – Founder of Day 1 Bags

Published

on

By

Guest: Hunter Beaton

Day 1 Bags started when Texas teen, Hunter Beaton, was challenged by the Eagle Scouts to come up with a way to solve a social problem. Hunter knew immediately that he wanted to help foster kids. Both of his siblings had come into his home from foster care carrying all their items in large black trash bags. He decided to change that. In no time Hunter raised over $10,000 for his first project and was able to donate bags to the child welfare agencies in Texas. Now, with the help of One Simple Wish and Flying Circle Gear, he is taking his idea nationwide!

For every $15 donated, you will be giving a brand new, durable duffle bag or backpack to a foster child entering or transitioning through the foster care system. These are large, high-quality bags that include a lifetime guarantee and will be replaced if ever damaged – no questions asked! This is a bag you would be proud to own.

In addition, each bag includes information about how kids can use One Simple Wish’s wish granting program anytime, reminding them that they are never alone and always part of our family.
The mission is to sustain the Day 1 Bags so they will not go away – no more black trash bags. I have partnered with the One Simple Wish to make that happen. The highest quality bag with a wish request to be granted! Let’s improve their journey!
