Published

on

Today’s guest is Live Oak Mayor Mary M. Dennis!

Bio

Mary M. Dennis was born in Newton, Mississippi. Mary’s father served in the United States Army and the family traveled throughout Europe and the United States. The family moved to San Antonio, Texas when Mary was 15. Mary, also known as “Little Mary” is the daughter of Mary Wyatt, the former owner of “Flowers by Mary”.

She is a Sam Houston High School graduate, a paraprofessional with the San Antonio Independent School District and completed a Mortuary Science Associate Degree at San Antonio College. Mary is passionate about the education and safety of our children. Mary is also a licensed Funeral Director having worked for both Sutton & Sutton Mortuary and Lewis Funeral Home. She helps wonderful people make difficult decisions and provide assistance during one of the most difficult times in their lives. Mary has found both of these professions to be very rewarding.

Mary has received numerous awards, but her most noteworthy accomplishment is being chosen to serve as Mayor for the City of Live Oak in the June 12, 2010 run-off election. She is the First African American to serve the City of Live Oak in this capacity. Prior to her Mayoral election, she ran twice for council seats in Live Oak and was defeated each time by a few votes. As destiny would have it, Mary was given the opportunity to complete the council place terms both times as the elected council person resigned. Mary Dennis says “It is about not giving up and being determined. This is something she learned from her parents – to never ever give up. Whatever your dream is – go for it!” Currently Mayor Dennis is serving her second term as Mayor of Live Oak, Mary desires to bring the city closer together across varied backgrounds. Mary believes that government is about helping people, being a good steward of tax dollars and making City government more efficient.

Her additional civic activities includes service as the Vice President to the Northeast Partnership, member of Randolph Metro Chamber, City of Live Oak Economic Development Corporation, City of Live Oak Planning and Zoning Commission, Bowden Charter of Business and Professional Women, San Antonio Commission of Literacy and Mary is a charter member of National Council of Negro Women – Ruth Jones McClendon Chapter. Ms. Dennis also served as Commissioner on the Mayor’s Commission for the Status of Women, San Antonio Livestock and Rodeo Public Affairs Committee, the Martin Luther King Jr. Commission and President of Pearls (Professional Business Women). She is a member of Livingway Christian Church.

Mary epitomizes the power of persistence as well as the incomparable power of an abiding faith in God.

Annually, on the first Sunday in October, LIFE CHAIN invites the churches in each city and town across North America to stand on a designated local sidewalk and pray for 90 minutes

Pastor David Lee Brown

https://www.10days.net/

10 Days is a prayer meeting for your whole city. The goal is for a season where Jesus Christ is the focus of every heart in your city for 10 entire days!

It’s a call to take a break from what’s normal on earth so we can enter into what’s normal in heaven.  Revelation chapters 4-5 describe the kind of worship that’s normal in heaven.  10 Days is a call to take vacation time, fast from ordinary life and daily distractions in order to see what’s normal in heaven happen in your city.

Josh Hurt – Music Artist

Guest: Josh Hurt

Bio

Josh Hurt is a native of San Antonio, Texas, and one of its most sought after and recognized singers. He brings an energetic and refreshing sound to music that appeal to the young as well as the seasoned saints. He sang his first solo in church at the age of 7 and since then his love for music has grown and now it is very evident that it’ll always be a part of his life.

Undeniably called to musically bridge denominational gaps, Josh carries a burden for uniting believers to worship the Father in spirit and in truth. It is further his desire to inspire and encourage other young men to cast aside the tough guy stereotype and relentlessly pursue the presence of God in worship. Josh also mentors worship leaders of various ages, frequently being called upon to help them bridge the gap in their churches between Traditional Gospel and Christian Contemporary Music sounds. He is often requested to lead Praise and Worship workshops as well as conduct choir workshops.

In addition to working on his own long-awaited recording. Josh provides vocal coaching services, has appeared as a featured lead vocalist on projects, including most recently the live recording of Anthony McBeth and the United Praise Chorale (Houston, Texas), and has recorded as well as arranged background vocals for several other projects.

Make no mistake about it: Josh Hurt is on the move, and he is not looking back. Since the very first time he heard Kim Burrell’s voice at the COGIC AIM Convention, it was clear to Josh that he wanted to be a singer and inspire others as he was likewise inspired that evening. Josh was later blessed to receive invitations to share his gift as a background vocalist for artists such as Josh Groban and Leandria Johnson. Additional opportunities soon came for him to share the stage with numerous gospel and inspirational artists, such as Fred Hammond, Israel Houghton, Jessica Reedy, Micah Stampley and Youthful Praise.

After walking away from what could have been a tragic automobile accident in early 2015. Josh credits God’s hand of deliverance for giving him a new lease on life. With even greater determination than before, he is taking full advantage of each day God gives him to do the will of the Father.

DANNY W. BROOKS JR.
Funeral Director/Owner

Danny W. Brooks Jr. was born in San Antonio, TX to Pastor Danny W. Brooks Sr., and Yolanda Brooks. Danny’s father is the lead pastor of Tried Stone Baptist Church and his mother is a teacher at St. Monica Catholic School. Danny has one brother, Danzel Brooks who is also following in his footsteps.
Danny graduated top 10% in his class from Judson High School in 2005. At the age of 18 Danny was the youngest to graduate from San Antonio College with a Mortuary Science degree. He has been a licensed funeral director for over 10 years.
Danny has performed over 2000 funerals/cremations in his young career. At twenty, he was the manager for D. W. Brooks Funeral Home where he led the team in sales and aided in the growth of the funeral home. At the age of 27, Danny’s father retired and Danny assumed full responsibility of the family business in February 2014. Currently, Danny is in the process of remodeling the funeral home and has given the funeral home its “social footprint” to better serve his customers. Danny has acquired land and plans to expand his business in hopes to reach a broader, more diverse customer base.
Danny feels being a funeral director is a “true” calling for his life. Danny’s passion is to assist families in their time of need. He has spent his entire career serving the families of San Antonio and surrounding areas with care and compassion. He never takes any passing lightly. This is why he became a funeral director. “That’s really what a funeral director is all about – helping people in our community through a difficult time.”
Danny is also a licensed pre-need and life insurance agent. He is active in the community, church, and always seeking ways to become more involved. Danny also launched his limo business Brooks Entertainment in the fall of 2016.
