Refocused Magazine Spotlight: Shana J Ray

Where are you from? Tell us about yourself.

I always laugh at this question and respond I’m from everywhere and no I’m not a military brat. My mom likes to move closer parents, so we’ve lived down most of the East Coast. I was born in New York and raised there for 4 years. Afterward, we moved to Virginia till I was nine, then we moved to Florida and we’ve been in Florida ever since. Currently, I am now raising my own family in Florida which includes my two daughters, my husband, our dog and I. I’ve been in Florida for a total of 20 years.

Tell us about your Youtube channel and what it is all about.

Almost two years ago I started my second YouTube channel, Shana J Ray. After getting a bit bored with my first channel which was only about natural hair I decided when I made a new one that it would be about a little bit of everything. Like a lifestyle sort of channel, but I still incorporate natural hair in because that’s a big thing for me. I’ve always gotten natural hair questions for all the years. I’ve been natural for 15 years and my nine-year-old and three-year-old daughters of course, have natural hair. Not to mention I started my husband’s locked for a second time. So natural hair takes up a good amount of my life and my channel. I also talk about natural alternatives and a vegan/vegetarian lifestyle. My girls are being raised vegetarian and I am a year into being vegan after being a pescatarian for nearly 10 years.  I also homeschool my girls so I highlight that on my channel. Not to mention I’ve struggled with self-image issues and negative self-talk for most of my life so I talk about how I’m working on myself to overcome those types of issues. Otherwise, my channel has random fun things like various hauls, challenges, and vlogs.

What drives you to be successful?

I really think I was born with it. I’ve always wanted to be a well-known and successful person. I come from a family with entrepreneurs and driven people on both sides. I’ve always had my hands and something to make moves, craft and make money since I was at least five. My first “business” was selling stickers in second grade for $0.10 each. Now, as a mother for almost 10 years now, I want so much for the family that I need to push as hard as possible. It’s not only about the money, but it’s also about what experiences we will be able to have as a family with the money we make. I also want to be around my kids full-time have these experiences with them but not have to clock in. I also have a video on my YouTube channel where I discussed a few other things that help me stay motivated in general.

What are some of the challenges you face on the entrepreneurship journey?

Wanting to do so much and have so much for my family to enjoy and I yet I still have to be patient as I work my way up. I know  I will get there as long as I continue to put in the effort. I love to have many outlets as well, I can’t just do one or two things at a time. It can get me to a point where I feel very overwhelmed, but I still keep trying to organize myself so that it’s less hectic somehow. In a recent burnout, I discovered keeping a separate creative hobby refreshed my soul and spirit I was able to start back at pushing to keep doing better.

How do you stay balanced between work and family?

Honestly, I don’t feel like i have found my balence between the two yet.  However, like most things in life, the work and family dynamics are constantly changing. With that in mind, I always keep changing things around in my schedule. So I have a mix of scheduling techniques. Recently, I made a content calendar and that helped a lot to the point where certain things became automatically. One more technique that I have practiced for years, is utilizing my phone calendar which is linked to my Gmail. My family and I are able to schedule events through each other’s email at something will be overlapping or not. Balancing work and family is not easy, I’ve just been learning to adapt and overcome to the major parts.

What advice would you give to new entrepreneurs?

Be consistent and paient.I say this so much to everyone because it helps in so many aspects of life, but you need to stay consistent and patient with what you would like to accomplish. Something that I took to long to learn. You have to keep creating, learning, and applying what you are learning on a regular basis. Then the hardest part is staying patience while putting in all this work without seeing much in return in the beginning. You have to keep in mind that success or whatever outcome you are looking for is coming. I gave up early with things that gave up way to early with things that I was trying to accomplish so many times because I thought I wasn’t getting anywhere. Then I started people that began at the same time as me with the same resources (sometimes less) becoming “quickly” successful. I’ve since been patience and I am slowly but surely seeing to benefits.

Anything you would like to share with our readers (events/projects/future goals)?

I always have something going on that I am working on, sometimes too much. I like to stay busy creating. At the moment my biggest work is my growing Youtube channel of course. I have always had my passion for fashion design for Anahs Designs on a slow burner. My newest projects are my blog Raisingbosses.com which is a mindset, growth and essential information on how I am trying to develop myself while raising a family. Lastly, my newest creative hobby, but nearly lifelong passion, I recently picked is photography SJ Ray Photography. I have refreshed my creativity overall. I am probably missing something because really have a lot going on but that’s because that’s how I like to be.

Bio

I’m a mom of two little girls, I wanted to be a fashion designer since I was 12. I’ve been slow to pursue my passion and it’s been harder with children as well a full time job. I’ve started pursuing other things to build up income to soon focus on my children, to be able to enjoy life without being stuck at a desk and also to be able to enjoy sewing & designing. I started YouTubing (YouTube.com/shanajray) over a year ago, there’s a little of everything on my YouTube. The main topics are natural hair, vegan food and children rearing/homeschooling. I’m slowly growing on YouTube I’d like to grow my out reach and help others learn more about taking care of natural hair and natural alternatives in life . I’ve recently started a blog last October called raisingbosses.com it’s mainly about me as a mother learning about business, self help/development, law of attraction and all the ups and downs in between.
